1-1 Psychologist Support

Hi, I’m Dr. Joe O’Brien, Chartered Health Psychologist. I work with people who feel stuck in cycles of emotional eating, binge eating, and shame around food.

Struggles with food are not due to a lack of willpower - there are many reasons we eat the way we do, and many of them are psychological or biological, not just about food itself.

Working with a psychologist means gently exploring the deeper drivers of your eating habits - not to judge or label, but to understand them. That understanding helps us know where to start and how to overcome what’s been getting in the way of change.

You don’t have to figure it out on your own

  • Psychologists are trained to work with the deeper emotional, behavioural, and cognitive drivers of eating.

While dietitians and coaches often focus on food choices and behaviour, I work with you to understand why those behaviours happen - it might be helpful to work with a psychologist if it feels like you already know what to do, but struggle putting that intention into action.

This is a signal that there are other drivers of your behaviour that might be subsconscious, keeping you stuck in the same cycles. A psychologist is trained to help with this!

  • Although 80% of people eventually get support for a psychology-related difficulty, on average people wait almost 10 years before getting support.

If the cause of your behaviour is psychological, it typically won’t change in the long term by dietary interventions alone, or by trying harder.

Binge or emotional eating are not typically things that just go away. Many people who come to therapy have been struggling with this on and off for years.

  • The first session is basically a chance for us to get to know each other. I’ll ask about your experience with food, what’s been difficult, and what you’re hoping will change. You can ask me any questions you’d like to know or understand better. You don’t need to prepare anything or say things that you’re not ready for - this all moves at your pace. It’s a very relaxed, non-judgemental conversation with another person.

You don’t have to book a second session if it’s not right for you.

  • No. Most of my clients have had years of people telling them what they can and can’t eat, and that doesn’t work in the long term. My approach is not about telling you what to eat, my approach is understand why it’s hard to eat in line with your goals, what are the psychological or emotional reasons why it’s hard, and how can we manage them differently.

That means we work on the psychological and emotional patterns that drive your eating, not meal plans or calorie goals. This way, the changes you make are more sustainable and less about restriction.

Over the course of your time with me, you’ll learn different psychological skills that you can use in the real world to support your goals.

  • That’s a really common feeling - most people tell me they worry they’re not “bad enough” to need help, but if food is something you think about more than you'd like, or if it’s affecting your mood, confidence, or daily life, then that’s reason enough to get help.

You don’t have to wait until it feels unbearable or until you hit rock bottom.

  • It typically depends what’s going on for you. Some people feel real progress after 8 sessions, while others prefer longer-term support. My work is open ended, meaning you can stay as long as you want, or leave when you want.

We’ll regularly review how things are going, and make sure we’re always focused on an area that’s important to you.

If you can’t attend many sesssions, for any reason, you can mention that and we can make accommodations to try and fit in as much work as we can in a short period of time.

  • Most of my clients have felt the same, - they’ve tried diets, coaches, and even therapy, and still feel stuck.

I hope that those experiences will give us a great understanding of what doesn’t work for you, and we won’t make the same mistakes or try something that has already failed.

Many health professionals don’t understand the psychological drivers of eating behaviour, and fail to address this in their practice. In my work, that is the sole focus.
